Eyal Frank tries to answer questions like these with his work at the intersection of ecology and economics. An assistant professor at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy, he uses natural experiments from ecology and policy—as well as other techniques—to estimate different pieces of the complex puzzle regarding the social cost of biodiversity losses. Frank joined Harris School of Public Policy and the Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) in 2018. In the following Q&A, he discusses the unexpected ways that animals can impact our lives—from the likelihood of car collisions, to changes in housing prices. How would you explain your research? My work is at the intersection of economics and environment, and specifically ecology. For years, I’ve seen academic paper after academic paper about the loss of species, and the fact that biological diversity was in freefall. Yet I wanted to see numbers attached; I wanted to know and be able to quantify the economic repercussions of ecological events. And I realized that, for the most part, those numbers didn’t exist. My research seeks to fill that gap. Using causal inference methods is not just going to matter to people who really care about panda bears and those who are dedicated watches of shows like Planet Earth; generating insights on ecology and economics has repercussions for work productivity, for agriculture, for energy use, and for much more. And it’s creating a way in which social scientists can understand what ecologists are worried about, using the best of applied methods. Tell us how bats play into this. One day I was reading an article about white nose syndrome, which has killed millions of bats. It’s important to realize that bats are incredibly important, in an ecological sense: They are powerful pollinators and important pest control agents. Ecologists acknowledge that they’re vitally important, but how important are they? For obvious reasons, no review board would ever sign off on a study that randomly killed bats in order to quantify how significant they were ecologically. Yet, I realized that a natural experiment was taking place as a result of the effects of white nose syndrome. I decided to combine different data sets that allowed me to test a key prediction in environmental economics. I found that in areas that experienced a decrease in the population of bats, farmers started using more insecticides to compensate for the reduction in biological pest control. Research since Rachel Carson’s 1962 classic Silent Spring shows that insecticides have negative effects—including on infant mortality rates. So now, we can see that bats are a meaningful part of the ecosystem—and we can see the important effects of not having them around. Like bats, wolves have some terrible PR as well. We’ve been looking at data from the United States on the effects of a program to reintroduce wolves into certain areas. We know that there are trade-offs: Wolves have an adverse effect on livestock, for instance, which is bad. But, on the other hand, wolves help reduce the deer population, and they deter deer from roadsides, which reduces collisions with automobiles. We’re looking into using the tools of economics to try to quantify these trade-offs. “I wanted to know and be able to quantify the economic repercussions of ecological events.” Asst. Prof. Eyal Frank What is climate change’s role in all of this? Climate change has a big role to play, and some of my work measures that role. Let’s look at the moth, L. dispar, for instance. (It was previously known by the common name “gypsy moth”; however, that name is no longer in use because it is a derogatory term.) The moth contributes to defoliation, and there are natural boom and bust cycles. There’s a fungus that keeps the moth population in check, but climate change threatens to slide the scales in favor of the moth. What will that mean? Well, we evaluated areas that have had great outbreaks in the moth population. Using detailed defoliation maps, we estimated that housing prices decreased by 2-5% near defoliated areas. So, you can start to see the connection—in unexpected ways—between climate change and people’s lives. Can you leave us with some final words? We’ve done a great deal of research—not just into bats, wolves, and gypsy moths, but also vultures and feral dogs, insects that are resistant to insecticides, and much more. The topics may seem peculiar, but I hope that my research can lead to a greater understanding of just how important ecology and wildlife are—not just for conservationists, but for all of us. Art Mirrors Real Life When It Comes to Moth Wings Have you ever had the impression that someone in a portrait is keeping an eye on you or following you around a room? The Mona Lisa effect is the name given to this optical illusion in honor of Leonardo da Vinci’s famously enigmatic masterpiece. No matter where viewers stand, to the left, right, or in front of the picture, eye contact is assured when painters paint their sitter’s eyes with the pupils perfectly centered. Nature seems to have had the same thought. However, it could be a matter of life or death in the animal kingdom. Eyespots Many fish, butterflies, moths, praying mantids, and beetles have paired circular markings on their bodies that look like eyes. Eyespots may divert a predator’s attention away from vital body parts of a target (a prey is much more likely to survive a bite to its tail than its head). Additionally, eyespots have the power to intimidate and stop predators in their tracks. One theory is that predators confuse eyespots with the eyes of their own predators. If this is the case, then eyespots that seem to be staring straight at them would be the most dangerous. Eyespots, like portraits whose eyes seem to follow you around the room, may seem to keep eye contact with predators regardless of their vantage point. If eyespots were shifted to the left or right, they would only defend victims against predators approaching from that direction. Another explanation is that eyespots have nothing to do with eyes. Predators could be deterred not because eyespots look like eyes, but simply because they are patterns that stand out. There are many conspicuous colors and patterns in the animal kingdom that are aversive to predators but look nothing like eyes – for example, the red and black patterns of ladybirds. Humans might perceive eyespots to look like eyes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that predators do too. They may simply see ‘scary’ conspicuous markings. Creating the Ultimate Death Stare We tested the idea that forward-facing eyespots appear to gaze at predators by pitting artificial moths against newly hatched domestic chicks. We created the moths by pinning paper triangles over mealworms – a favorite food of chicks. The paper triangles were printed with eyespots in one of three configurations: either perfectly concentric circles or with the center circle nudged to the right or left. All of the prey were designed to be equally conspicuous to the predators. To us, these appeared to gaze directly ahead or to one side. Would the direction of gaze affect the chicks’ motivation to attack? Staring Death in the Eye Next, we built three miniature catwalks (well, actually, chickwalks) to lead the chicks toward the moth. One led directly toward the prey, and the two others directed the chicks to approach the moth from either the left or right. We timed how long it took a chick to approach and attack each type of moth from each of the three directions. Chicks were slow to approach from the left when the moth’s eyespots were shifted to the left, and slow to approach from the right when the moth’s eyespots were shifted to the right. However, when chicks approached these moths from the opposite direction, they quickly approached the moth and ate the mealworm. The chicks were slow to approach the moths with concentric circle eyespots from all three directions. Our results are consistent with the idea that the chicks perceived our artificial eyespots as eyes, and that eyespots are most effective when they appear to gaze at predators. Eyespots that are concentric circles appear to stare at predators from a wider range of directions, just like the portraits that maintain eye contact from wherever you stand. This also probably explains why eyespots are so common in nature. The overarching theme of his research is how the sensory and cognitive processes of predators influence the evolution of their prey. Dr. Hannah Rowland is a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany, where she researches evolutionary and ecological interactions between plants, insects, and predators.

A study confirms that there is no genetic evidence for a link between someone’s face and that individual’s behavior. An interdisciplinary team led by KU Leuven and Stanford has identified 76 overlapping genetic locations that shape both our face and our brain. What the researchers didn’t find is evidence that this genetic overlap also predicts someone’s behavioral-cognitive traits or risk of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. This means that the findings help to debunk several persistent pseudoscientific claims about what our face reveals about us. There were already indications of a genetic link between the shape of our face and that of our brain, says Professor Peter Claes from the Laboratory for Imaging Genetics at KU Leuven, who is the joint senior author of the study with Professor Joanna Wysocka from the Stanford University School of Medicine. “But our knowledge on this link was based on model organism research and clinical knowledge of extremely rare conditions,” Claes continues. “We set out to map the genetic link between individuals’ face and brain shape much more broadly, and for commonly occurring genetic variation in the larger, non-clinical population.” Brain scans and DNA from the UK Biobank To study genetic underpinnings of brain shape, the team applied a methodology that Peter Claes and his colleagues had already used in the past to identify genes that determine the shape of our face. Claes: “In these previous studies, we analyzed 3D images of faces and linked several data points on these faces to genetic information to find correlations.” This way, the researchers were able to identify various genes that shape our face.   For the current study, the team relied on these previously acquired insights as well as the data available in the UK Biobank, a database from which they used the MRI brain scans and genetic information of 20,000 individuals. Claes: “To be able to analyse the MRI scans, we had to measure the brains shown on the scans. Our specific focus was on variations in the folded external surface of the brain – the typical ‘walnut shape’. We then went on to link the data from the image analyses to the available genetic information. This way, we identified 472 genomic locations that have an impact on the shape of our brain. 351 of these locations have never been reported before. To our surprise, we found that as many as 76 genomic locations predictive of the brain shape had previously already been found to be linked to the face shape. This makes the genetic link between face and brain shape a convincing one.” The team also found evidence that genetic signals that influence both brain and face shape are enriched in the regions of the genome that regulate gene activity during embryogenesis, either in facial progenitor cells or in the developing brain. This makes sense, Wysocka explains, as the development of the brain and the face are coordinated. “But we did not expect  that this developmental cross-talk would be so genetically complex and would have such a broad impact on human variation.” No genetic link with behavior or neuropsychiatric disorders At least as important is what the researchers did not find, says Dr. Sahin Naqvi from the Stanford University School of Medicine, who is the first author of this study. “We found a clear genetic link between someone’s face and their brain shape, but this overlap is almost completely unrelated to that individual’s behavioral-cognitive traits.” Concretely: even with advanced technologies, it is impossible to predict someone’s behavior based on their facial features. Peter Claes continues: “Our results confirm that there is no genetic evidence for a link between someone’s face and that individual’s behavior. Therefore, we explicitly dissociate ourselves from pseudoscientific claims to the contrary. For instance, some people claim that they can detect aggressive tendencies in faces by means of artificial intelligence. Not only are such projects completely unethical, they also lack a scientific foundation.” In their study, the authors also briefly address conditions such as Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Claes: “As a starting point, we used the results that were previously published by other teams about the genetic basis of such neuropsychiatric disorders. The possible link with the genes that determine the shape of our face had never been examined before. If you compare existing findings with our new ones, you see a relatively large overlap between the genetic variants that contribute to specific neuropsychiatric disorders and those that play a role in the shape of our brain, but not for those that contribute to our face.” In other words: our risk of developing a neuropsychiatric disorder is not written on our face either.  Reference: “Shared heritability of human face and brain shape” by Sahin Naqvi, Yoeri Sleyp, Hanne Hoskens, Karlijne Indencleef, Jeffrey P.
